![]() ![]() However, the original reel containing Mushroom Showdown disappeared from the Taped Rugs archives during the mid-1990s. In honor of the sonically "nuclear-powered" aspects of the recordings, and in tribute to the metabolism of certain varieties of fungus, one side of one of these tapes was dubbed: "Mushroom Showdown." Goff and Schaer transferred a few portions of this recording to cassette in the early 1980s, some of which Goff offered up for public observation on the internet in 2009. ![]() Two sides of two seven-inch reels of tape were recorded that day. Bits of a recorded Brian Eno lecture and a field recording of Gibbons at the San Francisco Zoo also were occasionally input into the session. ![]() Schaer played an electronic guitar and an ARP Odyssey synthesizer, modifying both through an analog delay effect box. Goff modified all of his audio inputs with a wah-wah/volume foot pedal. Goff played a 1950s lap steel guitar and a bass with a warped neck. Goff and Schaer also at intervals during the session intentionally set the decks to run at different speeds and physically manipulated the reels of tape to alter the recordings as they were being made. The two tape recorders, made by different manufacturers, had a tendency to run at different speeds that day, creating variances in the timing of the loops and gaps between recorded segments. That day's recording set-up consisted of two reel-to-reel tape recorders, tilted on their sides to accommodate the sharing of a single reel of tape in a Frippertronics-style audio loop arrangement. Steve's friend and well-known punk rock photographer, Raye Santos, was also present for some of the session, as were a couple of people who actually resided in the house, plus a few of their friends. It was an all-day affair that featured the talents of Goff and Schaer, as well as special guest: Killr "Mark" Kaswan, who that day was making his debut as a member of the Taped Rugs family of artists. In February, 1982, what has been regarded by Taped Rugs enthusiasts as one of -Ing's most memorable recording sessions took place at Taped Rugs Studio, located then in a funky old house at the corner of Ashby Avenue and Sacramento Street in Berkeley, California. ![]() Ing = Charles Rice Goff III & Steve Schaer ![]()
